Operations Division

The operations division is the corps of officers and crewmen within Starfleet who specialize in services and military functions on starbases, aboard starships, and at Starfleet Command. Members of the operations division may specialize in a ship or base service, administration, or military operations, or serve as staff officers. Operations officers include engineers, security and tactical, and some service specializations such as communications. Operations division personnel also fill administrative posts as yeomen, personnel officers and portmasters. By the 24th century, this division had new postings established on ships, such as operations officers (aka chiefs of operations).

The operations division, command division and sciences division usually are denoted by Starfleet uniform insignia, most often color coded.

Operations Officer

The operations officer was a Starfleet position within the operations division which was common in the 24th century.

On board starships, the operations position (also known simply as "ops") evolved from older 23rd century positions. The bulk of the duties held by the helm and navigation positions were combined into the conn position. Other functions of the helm panel, such as internal systems control, became the purview of ops, as have some communications and sensor system usages. Furthermore, ops personnel coordinate the scheduling of resources, hardware and system usage for an entire starship, outpost or space station.

The Chief of Operations or Operations Chief was the head of the operations division on an outpost or space station. They often worked out of the operations center and managed the engineering duties.

Duties of Operations Officers

The Operations Corps is responsible for maintaining the day-to-day operations of the fleet. On smaller vessels, Operations is sometimes combined with Engineering.

Operations operates mainly in some areas of the ship, such as the Computer Core, the Ops console on the Bridge, the Cargo Bays, and maintains such ship board systems as the deflector dish. Besides these main areas of focus, Operations Officers can be found almost all over the ship/starbase, constantly maintaining it and ensuring resources are used effectively and properly.

Operations personnel wear gold with their uniforms, along with Security, Tactical, and Engineering.
