Background

"The Skunkworks" is the unofficial name for the Special Projects Division of Starbase 47's Starfleet Corps of Engineers detachment. The Starfleet Corps of Engineers (also known as Starfleet Engineering or Starfleet Engineering Corps) is a Starfleet division that deals with specialised engineering problems. The Corps of Engineers was responsible for the construction of the underground laboratory complex on the Regula asteroid, where the second phase of the Genesis Project was conducted. The Starfleet Corps of Engineers is currently under the command of Captain Montgomery Scott.

The Starbase 47 SCE Special Projects Division is responsible for the research and development of advanced technologies, both ship and ground-based, to better equip Starfleet vessels as they carry out their missions. The "Skunkworks" has a special docking bay at its disposal with room to berth several small starships, or one large cruiser. The USS Taurus serves as a testbed for field trials of new technology from the Skunkworks, while the MV Endurance is a Starfleet freighter under civilian guise dedicated to transporting special components to and from Starbase 47.

Skunkworks personnel have the option of wearing a special patch on their utility jumpsuits. This patch resembles similar items worn by military personnel in the 20th and 21st century, and by Starfleet personnel in the 22nd century. It features a skunk motif against a white background, bordered in black bearing the unit designation. The patch is typically worn on the left sleeve.
