William Thalford Darrow was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2327. Very early in his life, William showed aptitude to write and to enthrall his teachers with fantastic stories about how he had lost his homework.
In his choice of university, William chose to study in Cambridge where he graduate with honors. Instead of joining one of the several Law offices that were offered him a job, William became a lawyer for the Starfleet Veterans Foundation. There he established the reputation of a shrewd and eloquent lawyer, fighting for changes in Starfleet rules and regulations.
He was known for the defense in Lau vs Starfleet, where ensign Justin Lau was accused of breaking the Prime Directive by helping to evacuate a facility during a fire in a pre-industrial World caused by a fallen Starfleet probe's debris. Lau was to be merely a observer at the time and had been ordered not to interfere by his superior officer. To begin with, Starfleet wasn't exactly happy to have him as Lau's defense, since he was very vocal against the Prime Directive. The fact William was the second civilian lawyer to act in a Court Martial - the first had been Samuel T. Cogley during James Kirk's trial in the 2260's - didn't help either, but that didn't matter to him.
After a long and impassioned plea to the court about human rights and quoted Edmund Burke's "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
Surprisingly enough, Lau was acquitted after the Admirals, impressed by Darrow's closing argument. It was proved that interference caused by Lau didn't affect the planet's culture since didn't introduced superior knowledge, strength, or technology.
After that, William Thalford Darrow opened his own practice where he acted mainly in Court Martial Cases where the prime directive was applied. His shrewd ability to prove his point and his unorthodox approach to cases gained a reputation and the nickname "Court Rogue", because no one knew when he would backstab the prosecution with sharp retort.
In his thirty nine years of practicing law, William Thalford Darrow still believes the Prime Directive is in need of alteration, since some use it to give the Federation an excuse not to act when necessary. "I agree with the spirit behind the Prime Directive", he said once, "But, I firmly believe some people in the Government are just using such directive to avoid making hard decisions. Interference may not be right, but watching something that is evil in any level is even worse."
